Natural Beauty: Five Simple Face Masks

Posted: April 30, 2015

Slathering your face with a mashed avocado, treating your pores with fruit, and using lemon juice to get rid of your blemishes might sound a bit odd, but natural beauty regimes are becoming more and more popular. If you’ve never heard of an egg-white face mask or a brown sugar scrub, where have you been?!

Health and beauty lovers all over the world regularly ditch their usual store-bought cosmetics for the natural stuff, and there are plenty of reasons to do so. Not only are food products a natural alternative to shop-bought options (meaning they’re free from synthetic ingredients and chemicals), but they’re often pretty cheap to buy too. And if it’s good enough for your belly, it’s good enough for your face – right?

We’ve listed below five natural face masks that sound irresistibly tasty!

1tbsp porridge oats (finely ground)

1tbsp organic Greek yoghurt

A drizzle of honey

METHOD: Place the porridge oats and yoghurt into a small bowl together and mix well. Place the honey into a saucepan and warm on the hob on a low heat for a few minutes. Pour the honey into the oats and yoghurt mixture, and mix well. Apply the ingredients to your face, and leave for 10-15 minutes before washing off with warm water and a muslin cloth. Apply your favourite moisturiser immediately after for a silky smooth finish!

WHEN TO APPLY: Apply this face mask before you go to bed.

WHY IS IT WORTH A TRY?  This mask will not only cleanse your skin but it’ll rejuvenate it too! The zinc and lactic acid in yoghurt helps to promote healthy skin. Applying yoghurt to your face also helps to remove dead skin cells and even smooth out fine lines – who knew?

1 ripe organic peach

2 tsp coconut oil

1 tbsp organic honey

1 tbsp brown sugar

METHOD: Cut the peach into squares and de-stone, then pop it into a blender and puree until smooth (add a little water if you need the mixture to be a bit runnier). Warm the honey and coconut oil either on the hob or in the microwave until it has a nice runny consistency. Place the peach puree into a bowl and add the honey, oil and brown sugar. Mix well, and place onto your skin in a circular motion. Wash the face mask off with warm water after about 15 minutes and pat your skin dry.

WHEN TO APPLY: Try this exfoliator during your morning skincare routine.

WHY IS IT WORTH A TRY?  The coconut oil in this exfoliator gives it a real boost of vitamins and minerals! It’s a great moisturiser, and helps to fight dry skin. The combo of coconut oil and brown sugar makes an excellent exfoliant, because it will remove your dead skin cells and unblock pores too!

1 ripe banana

½ tsp of baking powder

½ tsp of turmeric

Water (if required)

METHOD: Place the banana into a bowl and mash with a fork until it becomes smooth. Add the baking powder and turmeric to the mixture and mix well. If the mixture is too dry add some water until the ingredients form a smooth paste. Apply to your face using a brush and leave for 5-10 minutes before removing. FYI this cleanse might leave your face tingling because of the baking powder and beware of the turmeric – it can stain your clothes!

WHEN TO APPLY:  Apply this mask during your weekend pamper session.

WHY IS IT WORTH A TRY?  Banana is packed with vitamin C and B6 and both play an important part in helping to improve the elasticity of the skin. Bananas are also a great natural moisturiser and can prevent your skin from getting dry throughout the day. There are plenty of reasons why turmeric can help with your weekend pamper session too; it’s been known to help with acne break-outs and can even hide blemishes too.

1 ripe avocado

1 tsp lemon juice

1 tsp olive oil

METHOD: Slice the avocado open and remove the stone. Place in a bowl and mash the avocado until smooth. Next add your lemon juice and olive oil and mix well. Wash your face with warm water and pat dry before applying the mixture. Avoiding contact with your eyes, apply the mask and leave it on for about 10 minutes before washing off with warm water.

WHEN TO APPLY:  Apply this face mask in the evening, or whenever you fancy!

WHY IS IT WORTH A TRY?  It’s no secret that avocados are a super-food. They’re packed full of antioxidants which, when used as a skincare product, can help to protect your skin from environmental damage. Using avocados as part of your beauty regime can apparently reduce lines, wrinkles and other visible signs of aging.

2 cups of brewed green tea (Clipper teas of course!)

Your choice of essential oil

METHOD:  Brew two cups of green tea and let them completely cool down. Once cool, pour the green tea into a small spray bottle (you can get these at your local supermarket or chemist). Add two tablespoons of water to the green tea and a few drops of your favourite essential oil (like lavender, lemon or tea-tree).Give the bottle a quick shake and you’re ready to go!

WHEN TO APPLY:  Spritz this on your face after cleansing in the morning.

WHY IS IT WORTH A TRY? Green tea is full of anti-oxidants so, as part of a skincare routine, it’s thought it can help slow down the process of aging on the skin. This toner has plenty of water in it too so it’s ideal for hydration.

(Warning: if you’re allergic to any of the foods listed above, then it’s probably not a good idea to spread them all over your face…)
